What is a gym membership fee receipt?

A gym membership fee receipt is issued by a gym, fitness centre, yoga studio, swimming club or coaching centre when a member pays their subscription fee. For GST-registered businesses, it is also a tax invoice that the member can use for reimbursement claims (e.g. corporate wellness benefits) and that the gym reports in their GSTR-1.

Frequently asked questions

What GST rate applies to gym memberships?
Gym memberships and health and fitness club services attract 18% GST (SAC code 999321). Both intra-state and inter-state supply of membership services split as 9% CGST + 9% SGST or 18% IGST respectively. Yoga and meditation classes conducted by charitable trusts with a registration under Section 12AA may be exempt.
Does a gym need to register for GST?
A gym, fitness centre, yoga studio or coaching centre whose annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh for some north-eastern states) must register for GST. Below this threshold, registration is optional. Once registered, you must charge GST and issue proper tax invoices.
What fields should a gym membership fee receipt include?
A gym fee receipt should include: business name, address and GSTIN; receipt number and date; member name, membership plan, start and end dates; monthly/quarterly/annual fee; GST rate and amount (CGST + SGST); total amount paid; payment mode (cash/UPI/card); and the authorised signature.
Can I use this format for a yoga studio, coaching centre or swimming club?
Yes. The same format works for any membership-based service — yoga studio, swimming club, coaching centre, dance class or recreational club. Just update the service description and SAC code if different (e.g. coaching services use SAC 999293).
