What is an HSN code?

HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature, a globally standardised numeric system for classifying traded goods. Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it is used by over 200 countries. In India, HSN codes were adopted under the GST framework and are mandatory on tax invoices to identify goods and their applicable GST rate.

Every physical product you sell — from a bar of soap to a laptop — has an HSN code. The code ties your invoice line item to a specific GST slab (0%, 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%) and ensures your GSTR-1 and e-invoice are correctly classified.

What is a SAC code?

SAC stands for Services Accounting Code. It is India's equivalent of HSN but for services — maintained by the CBIC. SAC codes are 6-digit numbers assigned to every category of taxable service, from restaurant meals (996331) to software development (998314) to gym memberships (999722). If you raise a GST invoice for a service, the SAC code must appear in the same way that HSN does for goods.

How many HSN digits are required?

India's HSN requirement depends on your annual aggregate turnover (AAT) in the previous financial year:

  • Up to ₹1.5 crore: No HSN mandatory on B2C invoices; optional on B2B.
  • ₹1.5 crore – ₹5 crore: 2-digit HSN on B2B invoices.
  • Above ₹5 crore: 4-digit HSN on all invoices (B2B and B2C).
  • e-invoicing (above ₹5 crore): 6-digit HSN is required on all e-invoices uploaded to the IRP.
  • Export invoices: Always require the full 8-digit HSN code.

Voluntarily using 6 or 8 digits even when not required is always permitted and is best practice for accurate ITC reconciliation.

Understanding the HSN digit structure

An 8-digit HSN code breaks down into four levels:

DigitsLevelExample
First 2Chapter85 = Electrical machinery & electronics
First 4Heading8517 = Telephone sets & smartphones
First 6Sub-heading851712 = Mobile phones / smartphones
All 8Tariff item85171200 = Specific tariff classification

Start with the broadest 2-digit chapter to locate your product, then drill down to 4 or 6 digits for the precise classification.

How to find the right HSN or SAC code

  1. Use the search tool above — type the product or service name, or the first few digits of a code you already know.
  2. Verify on the GST portal — visit gst.gov.in → Services → User Services → Search HSN/SAC.
  3. Check the Customs Tariff — the CBIC publishes the full tariff schedule with 8-digit codes.
  4. Consult your CA — if your product is borderline between two headings, a qualified tax professional can advise on the most appropriate classification.

Using the wrong HSN code can result in an incorrect GST rate being charged, potential scrutiny during audits, and mismatches in your ITC (Input Tax Credit) claim. It is worth taking the time to get it right.

HSN codes and BillRaja

BillRaja is a GST billing app built for Indian small businesses. When you add a product to your product catalogue, you can store its HSN or SAC code once. Every time you create an invoice, BillRaja automatically prints the HSN code in the line-item table — just as required by the GST invoice format rules.

BillRaja also generates an HSN-wise summary section on your GSTR-3B-ready reports, grouping your turnover and taxes by HSN chapter so you can fill in Table 12 of your GSTR-1 return without manually tallying codes. You can generate a GST invoice with HSN codes in seconds, and share it via WhatsApp as a PDF — all from your phone.

Frequently asked questions

What is an HSN code?
HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature — a 6-to-8 digit numeric code assigned to every traded good worldwide. In India's GST system, HSN codes are mandatory on B2B invoices and e-invoices. The first two digits identify the chapter, the next two the heading, the next two the sub-heading, and the last two (when present) the tariff item. Every HSN code maps to a specific GST rate.
What is a SAC code?
SAC stands for Services Accounting Code — a 6-digit code used in India's GST system to classify services (just as HSN classifies goods). SAC codes are issued by the CBIC and are mandatory on GST invoices for services. Examples: 998314 for software development, 999721 for beauty/salon services, 996331 for restaurant services.
How many HSN digits do I need on my invoice?
Under GST rules: businesses with annual turnover up to ₹1.5 crore are not required to mention HSN on B2C invoices (but it is good practice). Turnover ₹1.5–5 crore: 2-digit HSN on B2B invoices. Turnover above ₹5 crore: 4-digit HSN on B2B invoices. For e-invoicing (mandatory above ₹5 crore), 6-digit HSN is required. Export invoices always need 8-digit codes.
How do I find the correct HSN code for my product?
Search this tool by product name or known code prefix. Then verify on the official GST portal (gst.gov.in → HSN/SAC search) or consult the Customs Tariff schedule. When in doubt, ask a CA — an incorrect HSN can lead to notices or mismatched ITC claims.
Can HSN codes and GST rates change?
Yes. The GST Council periodically revises rates and the government updates the HSN schedule (India moved from 2-digit to 8-digit alignment in 2022). Always verify the current rate on the official CBIC portal before filing returns or printing invoices.
Does BillRaja support HSN codes on invoices?
Yes. BillRaja lets you store the HSN/SAC code per product. When you raise a GST invoice, the HSN is printed in the line-item table and in the HSN-wise summary section — exactly as required by GSTR-1 and e-invoice formats. The app also generates an HSN-wise GSTR summary for your return filing.
